Dimitriou (Generali Hellas): Private insurance a pillar of protection and sustainability in the health sector

The role of private insurance in a period of increased costs and pressure in the healthcare sector was highlighted by the CEO of Generali Hellas, Panos Dimitriou, in the context of the CEO Initiative Forum, held by Fortune.

Dimitriou addressed the forum in the presence of the Deputy Minister of Health, Marios Themistocleous.

During his speech, Dimitriou underlined the basic mission of insurance, noting that "each of us wants to protect our health, our property and ultimately our dignity. This is the role of insurance."

He also explained that "the state cannot cover everything" and that the lack of coverage can jeopardize both the financial and family planning of the citizens.

Referring to the increasing cost of health, Dimitriou noted that "medical inflation in Greece is disproportionate to its equivalent abroad" and criticized the ongoing price increases, stating that "private hospitals should operate more modestly when it comes to increases."

He pointed out that "the increases do not come from insurance companies, but from private hospitals."

In order to improve the current situation in the healthcare sector, three sectors need to be aligned: insurance companies, hospitals and the state, with the State acting as a "regulator" to ensure cost rationalization and a more orderly healthcare system for the benefit of the citizen.
