Armidale finds itself in the middle of a Bureau of Meteorology storm warning tonight, November 25.
Following a crystal clear day with some blistering hot conditions, skies have turned incredibly dark and are moving rapidly northeast over the city proper.
Some people have reported power lines falling and localised blackouts in parts of the CBD, but the Express has been unable to reach Essential Energy to confirm as of 5.30pm.
Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds, large hailstones and heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding in the warning area over the next several hours. Locations which may be affected include Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie, Armidale, Moree, Tenterfield, and Narrabri.
Wind gusts in excess of 125km/h were recorded at Tamworth Airport earlier in the afternoon and those same extreme conditions are beginning to hit Armidale on the southern fringes of the city since about 5pm.
The BOM is encouraging all residents to move your car under cover or away from trees.
Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
If you see fallen power lines, stay at least eight metres away from them as well as any objects that may be energised, such as fences.
If you see a downed power line, report to either Ausgrid (131 388), Endeavour Energy (131 003), Essential Energy (132 080) or Evoenergy (131 093) as shown on your power bill.
