Autumn officially arrived on Monday, at least from a meteorological point of view. September 1 marks the end of summer as we move towards cooler months and darker nights.

The month is getting off to an unsettled start with wind and rain sweeping in from the Atlantic. The damp theme is set to continue during the week as the weather starts to turn.

But September still has the prospect of hot weather. In fact, there have been heatwaves recorded in Scotland during the ninth month of the year.

And it seems there is hot weather on the horizon, at least for some. WXCharts shows warm weather from the east is set to take charge later in the month, at least in eastern parts of the country.

That will see temperatures rise, especially in the Borders and Aberdeenshire. In fact, the Borders are forecast to bake in 27C heat on Monday, September 20 while it will also feel very mild in Fife, Dundee and Angus.

The heat will stick around, at least until Thursday, September 11 when it should revert back to something closer to the average. Those days should be dry for most, giving millions of Scots a last blast of summer.

The Met Office's long-range forecast hints at the possibility of warmer interludes despite the month being dominated by low-pressure systems from the Atlantic. The west coast will bear the brunt of the conditions, with "heavy rain or showers" common between September 5 and 14.

The Met Office states: "Thunderstorms and hail are also possible, as are some spells of strong winds if any deep areas of low pressure form in the vicinity of the UK. Some short-lived spells of drier and more settled weather are also possible at times, especially early and again late in the period, when they may last a little longer."

Temperatures are expected to be slightly below average after the hot summer. While meteorological autumn has started, astronomical autumn doesn't start until the equinox on September 22.
