Meanwhile, 193 people have died and another 228 are missing after floods and mudslides across Sri Lanka.- With APThe collision occured on South West Rocks Road in Jerseyville, northeast of Kempsey, about 3.30pm on Friday. One of the drivers, a 43-year-old woman, tragically died in hospital the following day after being saved from the wreckage. Brave onlookers rushed to the trucks, one of which had caught alight, to free the woman and the other driver, a 33-year-old man. Both were airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition while the blaze was extinguished by firefighters.A three-month amnesty period for the disposal of machetes has come to an end in Melbourne. The state's ban on owning machetes began September 1, with penalties of up to two years' jail or a fine of more than $47,000 for people who break the rules. More than 40 safe disposal bins were installed at police stations across the state to allow people to hand in machetes without penalty before the law came into effect. It is now illegal to own, use, carry, transport or sell the knives without an exemption or valid approval. The law was introduced after 14,805 edged weapons were seized in Victoria in 2024, with another 8900 confiscated by police between January and July this year.An e-scooter rider has been hospitalised after colliding a car in Brisbane. Emergency services received reports of a collision on the Stanley St ramp onto the Pacific Motorway in Wollongabba about 11.30pm. The rider, a 29-year-old man, sustained serious head injuries and was rushed to Princess Alexandra Hospital in a stable condition. Firefighters are warning Australians to check their Christmas lights and decorations as the festive season begin. Fire and Rescue NSW has responded to more than 3300 house fires in 2024, resulting in 29 deaths and more than 360 injuries.Fire Commissioner Jeremy Fewtrell urged families to check for faulty Christmas lights which can cause devastating fires. Netanyahu is the only sitting prime minister in Israeli history to stand trial, after being charged with fraud, breach of trust and accepting bribes in three separate cases accusing him of exchanging favours with wealthy political supporters.Police, including the officers from the Marina Area Command and Surf Life Saving NSW attended to the scene.Bushfire threat looms during sweltering summer Australians are being warned to prepare for a scorching summer with warmer-than-average temperatures forecast across much of the country from now until February. The Bureau of Meteorology has issued its long-range forecast on the first day of summer, predicting sweltering conditions during both day and night with little reprieve from the heat. The forecast covers a large part of the country, with southern states and the east coast facing an equal chance of receiving either above or below average rainfall over the coming months.
