Technology company Lenovo is continuing its efforts in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives by integrating sustainability across its business, from product design and packaging to supply chain operations and customer solutions.
Lenovo has more than a decade of sustainability reporting and has set targets to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050, in line with the Science Based Targets initiative's Net-Zero Standard.
As part of its roadmap, Lenovo aims to reach 2030 reduction targets that include:
Lenovo has also introduced low-temperature solder technology, which has cut 10,000 tons of CO₂ emissions since 2017.
The company is applying circular practices in its products and services. It has used over 100 million pounds of net recycled plastic since 2005, and through its Asset Recovery Services, Lenovo refurbishes, reuses, and recycles end-of-life IT assets to help customers reduce waste and security risks. By FY 2025/26, Lenovo targets:
Lenovo is also rethinking packaging to reduce waste. Since 2008, it has eliminated 3,737 metric tons of packaging weight and reduced plastic tape use by 54 tons annually. Bamboo fiber is now used in some ThinkPad X1 boxes, reducing packaging weight by 30%. By FY 2025/26, Lenovo plans for 90% of PC products' plastic packaging to come from recycled materials. Partnerships with companies such as Intel support the integration of bamboo and sugarcane materials in packaging.
In its supply chain, Lenovo aims to cut 1 million tons of GHG emissions by FY 2025/26. Collaborations with logistics and transport providers including DB Schenker, Lufthansa Cargo, and Maersk are reducing emissions across shipping routes.
Lenovo also provides customers with Sustainability Solutions, including bulk packaging and lower-carbon transport, CO₂ Offset Services, TruScale as-a-Service models to reduce overprovisioning and e-waste, and Asset Recovery Services, which diverted 31,532 metric tons of products for recycling and reuse in 2023.
"Smarter technology for all builds a more resilient way forward," said Michael Ngan, president and GM of Lenovo Philippines. "As the world faces growing complexity and uncertainty, Lenovo is committed to innovation that not only drives progress but also ensures long-term value for people, communities, and the planet."
The company's ESG strategy reflects its view that technology can support both business performance and lasting social and environmental impact, while helping organizations achieve their own sustainability goals.
