New app maps over 200 parks and open spaces across Malta and Gozo

Over 200 open spaces in Malta and Gozo have been listed in a new web app, which allows people to search for their nearest park or garden while filtering for dog-friendly areas, bicycle-friendly zones, scenic spots and playgrounds.

The app -- Parks in Malta, developed by Project Green -- was launched on Thursday morning during a press conference at Wied Incita in Attard, close to Mount Carmel Hospital.

Users can search for parks offering wheelchair-accessible pathways, inclusive play areas, outdoor gyms, accessible toilets and picnic-friendly zones, among other features.

The app also lists events taking place in open spaces, opening hours and available facilities. A "report an issue" feature allows people to report damage or other concerns.

Minister for the Environment Miriam Dalli emphasised the link between the environment and people's mental health.

"We live a rushed life, and it's important for us and for our kids to get off screens. We need to be taking our children out more and away from mobile phones," she said.

Dalli added that next year's budget had allocated the largest-ever capital to the Ministry for the Environment, Energy and Public Cleanliness, amounting to €275 million.

"This represents a 26% increase within two years. Around us, other governments are cutting investment in the environment. In contrast, our country has a strong economy that allows us to keep investing," she added.

Health Minister Jo Etienne Abela said open spaces were necessary and crucial for mental well-being.

"Today we are here in a green and open environment. Our aim is to keep investing in care at the heart of the community, where people can find the help they need just a few steps away from their home," said Abela.

He added that next year's budget had allocated funds for continued investment in three centres in Malta offering community-based mental health services and mental health first-aid courses in collaboration with the Richmond Foundation.
