Gallus, Hawks hang on against rival

Sophomore quarterback Tripp Gallus threw for 347 yards and three touchdowns to power visiting Hanahan High School to a rivalry victory at Philip Simmons High School Monday, Aug. 25, in a game postponed from Friday due to rain.

The field was still wet, but there was plenty of fireworks from both teams.

In setting two new career highs, Gallus finished 17-of-26 through the air and distributed scoring tosses to Bo Brabham, Grayson Mathes and Julien Washington. Mathes led all receivers with seven grabs for 149 yards and a 43-yard touchdown. Brabham hauled in five passes for 128 yards, including a 57-yard touchdown reception. Washington's scoring grab covered 13 yards.

Also for the Hawks, running back Josh Amara was a wrecking ball from short yardage. He reached paydirt on runs of 10, 1 and 1 yards.

The Hawks take a 4-3 lead in a series that goes back to 2019. Hanahan hosts Wando Friday, Aug. 29, and travel to another rival Bishop England Friday, Sept. 5 for another non-conference matchup.

Philip Simmons dropped to 0-1. The Iron Horses are on the road at Lucy Beckham Friday, Aug. 29, and Beaufort, Friday, Sept. 5.

Hanahan led by 20 twice in the second half but the Iron Horses kept chipping away at their deficit. Philip Simmons eventually pulled within 40-34 with 1:35 remaining and recovered the ensuing onside kick. However, the Iron Horses couldn't complete the rally despite getting close as the losing team seemingly always does.

The past three matchups have been decided by a total 11 points.
