Parish targets Ashford legacy

Parish targets Ashford legacy

Danny Parish wants to be at Ashford for years to come after starting his third spell with the club.

Parish rejoined the Nuts & Bolts from Sittingbourne last week and scored twice in a 6-0 Isthmian South East win at East Grinstead on Saturday - including a cracking second.

It was the perfect way to mark his 27th birthday and Parish, who scored 43 goals in 74 appearances across two previous spells, is ready to lay down roots at Homelands.

"The whole club's going in the right direction and that's what excited me about coming back," said Parish.

"I turned 27 on Saturday, I'm now looking for somewhere I'm going to be for the next three, four, five years and start getting some kind of legacy at a club.

"I've already got a good record at Ashford, so it was a no-brainer that I could continue that."

Skipper Gary Lockyer became the club's all-time leading goalscorer this season, breaking Shaun Welford's record of 85, and he continues to bang the goals in.

Parish is a little way behind but has his own targets.

"We have a joke about goals because me and Gary are competitive and we want to score as many goals as possible," said Parish.

"But for me, I focus on myself and my target is first to hit 50, and I hope to do that before 100 games, which is my next milestone.

"And then after that it would be 100 goals for the club."

Parish's second spell with Ashford ended almost two years ago when he was released by then-boss Kevin Watson despite being the top goalscorer.

His return caught everyone by surprise - including himself - but he's chuffed to be back and is off and running again in Nuts & Bolts colours after his second-half double at East Grinstead.

He was looking at his options after deciding to pursue regular football away from Sittingbourne.

After talks with manager and co-owner Lloyd Hume, there was only one place he wanted to be.

"I've always enjoyed my time at Ashford, me and my family," said Parish.

"It's like a package deal where my family have always felt at home and I've always felt at home.

"I've got a really good relationship, and so have my family, with all the fans.

"Where I have had quite a lot of success at Ashford, and my goalscoring record is quite good, I think the fans took a liking to me, and I feel the same about them.

"It just feels like a warm environment and, for me, it's just a known entity. I know the club, I know the fans, I know the pitch, little things like that.

"I don't have to worry about little things not being right. Even though it's under new ownership, it's still Ashford.

"After speaking with Lloyd - our conversation was about 45 minutes to an hour long - I was 90 per cent certain I was going to choose Ashford.

"No one really expected it, I didn't expect it, the fans didn't expect it, but I'm really happy Lloyd was interested because I think both myself and the club will flourish."

Parish scored the final two goals at East Grinstead following his introduction on the hour mark.

He added to Lockyer's double and goals from Noah Carney and Jefferson Aibangbee as Ashford chalked up their third league win this season.

"It's been nearly two years since I left and you want to get up and running again as quickly as possible," said Parish.

"The first one is normally the hardest and then they can start coming in more regularly.

"It felt good but I didn't feel that pressure because I know that every time I've played for Ashford, and this is the third spell, I've scored goals and had a really good record.

"So I knew I was going to come back and be able to do it and have that belief in myself.

"I'm really enjoying being back.

"We're in a false position in the league but we've got games in hand and if we win them, it looks completely different.

"With a few players coming back from injury, we've got the squad to do a lot better than we currently are in the league."

Ashford lost 2-1 at Merstham on Tuesday night, Roarie Deacon with the Nuts & Bolts' second-half goal.

They visit Real Bedford in the FA Trophy first round this Saturday (3pm).
