Lane Kiffin fires back at Brent Venables' comment on the 'better team'

Lane Kiffin didn't exactly bite his tongue when he heard what Brent Venables had to say after Saturday's game.

The Ole Miss coach fired back hard Monday after Venables suggested Oklahoma was the "better team" despite losing 34-26.

"Interesting take. That's a hot take," Kiffin told college football reporters. "I wouldn't have thought that people watching would say that. I think we left a lot out there. I think we should have won by a couple scores. I don't know how he evaluated that game that they were the better team. Way more yards, 21 first downs to 14."

Then Kiffin turned up the heat.

"Maybe they had the better team last year too when we beat them. Maybe he had the better team at Oklahoma when we beat them 55-19 in the national championship," he said. "Maybe he had the better team at Clemson when we beat them 45-40 in the national championship at Alabama."

That's vintage Kiffin -- quick with stats, quicker with receipts. Ole Miss outgained Oklahoma 431-359 and dominated time of possession, so he's not wrong to question Venables' logic.

Venables, meanwhile, said his Sooners lost because of "poor execution," but that line rarely lands well after a defeat. Especially one where the numbers and the scoreboard both favored the Rebels.

It's not the first time Venables' comments have rubbed people the wrong way, and with Oklahoma struggling for consistency, Kiffin's jab might sting a little extra.
