A common rescue call: Injured woman helped from Eternal Flame Trail

An injured woman was rescued Saturday night on the Eternal Flame Trail in Chestnut Ridge Park in what has become a common incident reported on the popular Orchard Park trail.

The Erie County Sheriff's Office said they worked with EMTs from Orchard Park Fire Company to assist the 61-year-old woman from Maryland, who had fallen and injured her hip.

She was taken from the trail and transported by ambulance to Erie County Medical Center for further evaluation and treatment, according to the sheriff's office.

Erie County Sheriff John C. Garcia said the sheriff's office SWAT team and Medical Response Unit have responded to 19 first aid and rescue calls at Chestnut Ridge in the last year.

"Our deputies, particularly those who make up our SWAT/QRF Team and Medical Response Unit, are among the most prepared in the nation for an incident such as this," Garcia said. "We must be prepared, and we are."

Deputy Dan McCarthy, a state certified paramedic and member of the Medical Response Unit and SWAT team for the sheriff's office, was on the scene to lead the rescue effort, according to Garcia.

The sheriff's office responded to the call for help approximately 6:15 p.m. Saturday.

In 2023, Erie County made some upgrades to the trail to try to make it less of a treacherous hike.

Erie County Parks Department and Chestnut Ridge Conservancy collaborated on a $134,000 project to improve trail safety. The trail was closed for about a month.

Among the improvements made were the construction of railings, the installation of roughly 135 timber box steps and relocating a trail section that is located in the streambed.

Access to the popular attraction will still be available.

Overcrowding and safety concerns with the trail are common and caused the temporary closure of the trail in 2020.
