'One of the easiest decisions' as popular prop extends Knights stay

YORK Knights fan favourite Jack Martin says it was a "no-brainer" to extend his stay at the club for 2026.

Since joining York midway through the 2024 campaign, the no-nonsense prop has become known for barnstorming runs, constant energy and hard-hitting runs at opposition defences, going on to become one of the first names on the teamsheet.

The 24-year-old has been an ever-present for the Knights this year, starting 31 matches, scoring six tries, and playing a large part in the sides that won both the 1895 Cup and Championship League Leaders' Shield during a club record 20-match winning run.

He opened this season's account with a crucial try at Batley, which kickstarted York's campaign, also finding the whitewash against Widnes, Sheffield, Hunslet and London, and in their regular season closer against the Bulldogs.

Consistent high-level performances across the season saw the front-rower also pick up the club's Forward of the Year.

Head coach Mark Applegarth is delighted to have secured Martin's services for York's first-ever Super League season, saying: "Jack Martin is still young.

"He does a lot of the tough stuff. He's a throwback to your old school front rower.

"He enjoys doing the hard stuff that it says on the tin - just no nonsense, straight up and down and he never shirks a carry. He puts his head where it hurts.

"He's got a great work rate and is always looking to improve. I'm delighted to get him over the line."

Another of chairman Clint Goodchild's hidden gems, Martin made the move to York from Wynnum Manly Seagulls, having also previously represented Cronulla Sharks and Ipswich Jets in his native Australia.

He also once featured for the Queensland under-19's, whilst making 32 appearances in the Queensland Cup and two outings in the New South Wales Cup in the Reserve Grade.

The prop didn't hesitate in penning a new deal with the club, adding: "Re-signing for York was a no brainer for me and one of the easiest decisions I've ever made.

"We've got a great set of coaching staff here, who are even better people and the playing group is one of the best I've been a part of.

"I'm super excited to be in Super League in 2026 and can't wait to rip in with the boys."
