Newcastle United star Sandro Tonali is tied down until at least 2029, new reports say, and more talks are on the way for one of the Magpies' most prominent players - and some fans in the Chronicle Live comments section are happy to see the club doing more to keep hold of their best assets.
Tonali's original contract ran until 2028, but a one-year extension set a new expiry date of summer 2029. On top of that, the club hold an option to extend it for a further year, into 2030 - giving Newcastle plenty of leverage when it comes to fending off rising interest in one of their most important players.
Tonali is happy in black and white, and has been impressive since he made his return from his FIFA ban, for betting offences. Talks are scheduled for a fresh deal regardless of his contract expiry date, which will involve the club's new sporting director, Ross Wilson.
The Italian midfielder has been tentatively linked with a move back to Serie A, with Juventus and AC Milan mentioned, but neither of the top Italian teams can hold much hope of being able to afford the 25-year-old.
Some fans are happy to see that one of their favourites should be with them for years to come. Reader Davros92001 says: "Good to know he's contracted to 2030. I think Sandro is probably the best midfielder I have seen in a Toon shirt.
"Everything he does is graceful and elegant, he's a proper Rolls-Royce player in my view. We will get offers for him, I feel it's inevitable, but hope he stays at the club for many a year."
Commenter Terryparker writes: "Great player, could become another NUFC legend." El070 adds: "Same thing I wrote last week, he is going nowhere, he's happy at Newcastle."
On our Facebook page, Chris Oyston says: "That was the one i was worried about. Great stuff. Setting an example we arent a selling club anymore."
Dave Rkto Brydon writes: "Means a nice big transfer fee if any potential suitors want 'Toonali'."
Gary Rowell says: "Great news. Potentially here until 2030 - if so, he will go onto to be regarded as one of the Toon's very very best players, if not the greatest."
Jean Warbrick writes: "Well done Sandro, it just shows the loyalty you have to the club, the fans, and manager, you are loyal to NUFC."
John Dodds agrees: "Well done Sandro, paying back the loyalty shown by NUFC for sticking by him when he was in trouble. Fantastic player."
Naggy Guibman Amid says: "I will always look forward to Sandro's time on the pitch. He's just fantastic... great work Sandro!"
