"This is, by far, the highest annual increase that has taken place since such measurements began in 1957," Ramesh further said attributing the surge to continued fossil fuel use, increased wildfires, and declining absorptive capacity of carbon sinks like oceans and forests due to global warming.

While acknowledging the impressive growth of renewable energy capacity, Ramesh lamented that it is not having the desired impact. "The growth of renewable energy capacity has been impressive. But clearly that is not having its desired impacts," he said.

Ramesh also raised concerns about the impending US withdrawal from the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, questioning whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi will urge his counterpart to reconsider.

"To compound the crisis, soon the one year notice period for the US's withdrawal from the Paris Agreement on Climate Change will get over. Will Prime Minister Modi try and convince his good friend to the contrary?" Ramesh asked, emphasizing the need for global cooperation to address the climate crisis.
