Virgil van Dijk explains why Liverpool were 'asking for trouble' at Brentford in new vow - Liverpool Echo

Virgil van Dijk remains confident Liverpool will turn around their wretched form. It comes after the 3-2 loss at Brentford condemned the defending champions to a fourth successive Premier League defeat.

It was also the Reds' fifth reverse in six games in all competitions and they could find themselves 10 points behind league leaders Arsenal by the time they entertain Aston Villa next at Anfield on November 1.

"It's a collective thing," Van Dijk said. "We go through phases in a season where we all have to improve and step up. That's a matter of fact.

"Maybe it feels like we're repeating ourselves, but obviously I have to stand here and speak to you guys at times as well.

"It is down to us to keep going. We want to turn this around. That is a fact. I'm confident that we will, but we need to work for it with everything that we have together with everyone involved and have Liverpool in their hearts.

"I think we gave maybe, in my feeling I have, maybe 10 throw-ins away in the first 20 minutes. And if that's the strength of the opponent, then obviously you're asking for trouble.

"So, yeah, listen, it's disappointing, but more disappointing that obviously we can't keep a clean sheet at the moment.

"You know, something that I'm obviously also part of, like the rest of the team. It's not only one player or the back line, it's everyone that's responsible for that and we have to improve in order to get back to winning ways in the league."

Van Dijk conceded a penalty at 2-1 after he was judged to have fouled Dango Ouattara in the second period by referee Tim Robinson, who replaced the injured Simon Hooper at half time, who had earlier not given a spot-kick after Cody Gakpo went down inside the area.

"If people say it's clear and obvious, I don't think it was too clear and obvious, but listen, the fact is he gives it and we have to deal with it," Van Dijk said. "But in my opinion, then you have to also give the first one to Cody.

"But it is what it is, we can't change it. And it is a situation that these decisions at the moment don't fall our way, but we have to deal with what we can control and that's to improve because that's needed, all of us.

"Again, there's something we can't control, we can control our performances that we have to focus on and they have to control their performances. Today he gave the penalty to them and not to us and that's something that we had to deal with.

"Unfortunately, today, I don't say it cost us the game but obviously it was an important moment because coming out at half time you want to turn it around. You feel obviously you're scoring before the break that you have a little bit of momentum. But unfortunately the penalty obviously put a little dent in that situation."

Van Dijk added: "Obviously, it's a disappointing night. We conceded two goals again in the first half, in what we obviously trained on as well, because their throw-in are obviously very dangerous.

"I think the first one we defended well, but we gave them opportunity after opportunity after that to put it back in. Yeah, the second one was on a transition, which is obviously a strength of theirs as well. So yeah, disappointed, but scored a good goal just before the break. And then you have to keep going.

"Obviously in the second half we're trying a lot more, we're taking risks, so it will be more chaotic at times because you're pushing and you're trying and you are forcing. But yeah, listen, you can speak about everything.

"The matter of fact is that we lost four Premier League games in a row and that we want to turn that around ASAP. The aim was obviously to build on the performance that we had in Germany (5-1 win against Eintracht Frankfurt), but unfortunately, we couldn't do that today.

"So we have another opportunity on Wednesday (against Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup) to try and get a good performance in, find a clean sheet hopefully and win the game."
