Saints fans took aim at three culprits after Blackburn disaster

Saints fans took aim at three culprits after Blackburn disaster

THERE was a cocktail of anger following Southampton's 2-1 defeat at Ewood Park on Saturday as nobody escaped without vocal criticism from the over 2,000-strong away contingent.

As the Blackburn Rovers fans sang for the removal of their much-despised owners, the Venkys, Saints fans aimed their ire at all associated with their club.

Chants of "sacked in the morning", "sack the board" and "you're not fit to wear the shirt" rang out in the strongest incident of vocal dissatisfaction this season.

It followed Southampton's latest on-pitch capitulation, as they suffered defeat from a winning position for the second time this week.

This was also their 50th league game since winning promotion to the Premier League via the Championship play-offs. Southampton have won just four of those fixtures.

Fair play to the fans who keep turning up to watch Southampton. Yesterday's game was the 50th league fixture since they won the Championship play-offs in May 2024. They've won four of those - a win rate of just 8%.#SaintsFC

Leo Scienza's first Saints goal had them in the driving seat in Lancashire, but their inability to see a game out left them heading back to the south coast without any points.

Blackburn had threatened to equalise long before they actually did, which made Adam Armstrong's double salvo of misses all the more painful.

Saints have considered themselves unlucky in some of their previous defeats, either due to the nature of goals conceded or because they failed to take their chances.

But Blackburn deserved these points. Yuki Ohashi and Ryoya Morishita spurned big opportunities before Ryan Alebiosu levelled with an overhit cross.

And the sequence of events which led to Cam Bragg failing to clear his lines inside the box for Blackburn's winner baffled supporters wherever they watched from.

The 20 year old should not have found himself in that situation. With Caspar Jander and Flynn Downes out of the squad with illness, Joe Aribo and Kuryu Matsuki watched from home.

Things had already started to turn when Still elected to introduce captain Jack Stephens to replace goalscorer Scienza after 68 minutes.

The Brazilian was a rare spark in the game and should have had an assist when he fed Armstrong, but was never going to play 90 minutes at Blackburn, according to the boss.

Still's decision to introduce centre-back Stephens in midfield, and move Finn Azaz out wide, prompted loud boos, and supporters questioned whether he knew what he was doing.

It was Bragg who found himself in a deep defensive position for Blackburn's winner while Stephens was on the edge of the box.

Still expected the angry reaction from fans at full-time. If those fans are proven right, and he is sacked, he will become the sixth managerial casualty under Sport Republic.

Saints moved up to 11th after beating Brentford 4-1 in their first game under new ownership in January 2022. They are now 20th in the Championship.
