One of the questions that a lot of fitness enthusiasts really want to ask is if outdoor running is better than treadmill running. Which one out of the two burns more calories? Which one is more conducive for long run and overall well-being? There are also some people that see no difference between the two.

Moneycontrol's team reached out to a Bengaluru-based fitness coach, Vijay Kumar, to understand the difference between outdoor vs treadmill running. "See, both are effective if you want to achieve cardiovascular fitness. Also, one can meet their goal of burning a certain number of calories by running outdoors as well as running on a treadmill. If one is really confused between which one is better for them, then they need to factor in a few things," shared Kumar.

As per the coach, listed below are some points that talk about advantages of running of treadmills and outdoors:

Benefits of outdoor running:

1. If someone wants to maintain their pace in a controlled manner and is probably new to running, then they should try treadmill running in the first place.

2. Another advantage of running on treadmills is that one can be more consistent with it, as one doesn't have to worry about the weather outside.

3. There are many features available on treadmills via which one adjust their speed and incline level if they have specific goals to achieve.

4. The equipment shows one speed, distance covered, heart rate and more on a continuous basis, making it easier for an individual to track their process.

5. It is also good for people who have problem in their joints, as some of the treadmills come with shock absorption feature.

Benefits of running outdoors:

1. The best part about running outdoors is that one can breathe in fresh air. This in turn helps stimulate one's mind, making the experience more fun and enjoyable.

2. While running, there are steep and all kinds of terrains. So, this gives individuals a chance to build their strength and be more agile.

3. If someone wants to participate in marathons, then they need to run outdoors to have a more real, wholesome experience.

4. Running outdoors helps build more endurance, muscles and stamina too.

Outdoor running Vs Treadmill running: Points to consider

* Treadmill running: It is better if you want to prevent injuries, have a more structured training, and run at a consistent pace.

* Outdoors running: It is better if you want to engage more muscles, feel more fresh and mentally stimulated, and prepare yourself for participating in marathons.

Outdoor running Vs Treadmill running: What helps burn more calories?

Outdoor running can burn slightly more calories because of wind resistance, terrain changes, and natural inclines. The same can also be achieved when running on treadmill; all one needs to do is adjust the speed, incline level and so on.

What one must bear in mind is that intensity, duration, and body weight determine total calorie expenditure more than the surface itself.

FAQs on outdoor running vs treadmill running:

1. Which is better for overall fitness -- outdoor running or treadmill running?

Both can improve cardiovascular health and endurance. Outdoor running engages more muscles (especially stabilizers) and burns slightly more calories due to wind resistance and varied terrain. Treadmill running, on the other hand, allows for consistent pacing and controlled conditions, making it easier on the joints.

2. Is treadmill running easier than running outdoors?

Generally, yes. Treadmills offer a flat, predictable surface and remove wind resistance, making the effort slightly less intense. To mimic outdoor conditions, you can set the treadmill incline to about 1%.

3. Which is safer -- treadmill or outdoor running?

Treadmill running is safer in terms of weather, visibility, and surface hazards. However, outdoor running exposes you to fresh air, sunlight (for vitamin D), and changing scenery, which can be more mentally stimulating and motivating.

4. Does outdoor running have more impact on joints?

Yes, uneven surfaces and harder pavements can increase joint impact. Wearing supportive running shoes and varying routes can help reduce strain. Treadmills, with their cushioned belts, are generally gentler on the knees and ankles.

5. Which one helps with better mental health benefits?

Outdoor running often provides greater mood-boosting effects due to exposure to nature, sunlight, and open spaces. However, treadmill running can still be mentally beneficial -- especially if paired with music, TV, or virtual running apps.
