Franklin Housing Authority receives $600K from state for affordable housing renovations

The Franklin Housing Authority was recently awarded $600,000 from the Tennessee Housing Department Agency to help with the renovation of 16 affordable housing units.

The funds will be used on the Natchez Street Apartments, which the agency acquired in 2021. The project will include interior and exterior renovations, such as painting, new appliances, doors, windows, flooring and other necessary repairs, officials said.

The Natchez Street Apartments are one of 12 units or facilities that are operated by the Franklin Housing Authority, which has been in place since 1953.

Residents served by the agency include low-income families, seniors and those with special needs.

"Affordable housing is critical to the Franklin community," said Derwin Jackson, president and CEO of the agency. "The Franklin Housing Authority appreciates the partnership and support from THDA by providing funding for needed renovations to the apartments."

Although Franklin is located in the richest county in Tennessee, 4.84% of its population is under the poverty line, officials report.

"We are proud to support affordable rental housing initiatives during a time where there are limited rental options for low-income families," said Ralph Perrey, Executive Director of THDA. "Partners like the Franklin Housing Authority are the cornerstones of ensuring Tennesseans have housing options."

The latest grant from the state comes four months after the Habitat for Humanity Williamson/Maury charter received a $46,500 grant from the Tennessee Housing Development Agency (THDA).

"THDA is a vital partner in making homeownership attainable for more Tennesseans," said Colleen Dudley, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of Tennessee. "This grant is an investment in families who are working hard to achieve homeownership. It also strengthens local economies by fostering stability and growth, ensuring that communities continue to thrive."
