The US water supply is buckling under the weight of drought, the water demands of AI data centers and aging water infrastructure.
Doña Ana County has scheduled a series of community meetings throughout the county regarding a proposed "Digital Infrastructure Campus" in Santa Teresa.
Austin, Texas-based firm BorderPlex Digital Assets promised jobs and $5 billion in construction spending over the next 10 years, but opponents have raised environmental concerns centered on the potential impact of the county's water supply.
The project would be funded through the issuance of $165 billion in Industrial Revenue Bonds (IRB). The money would finance the construction and installation of a "hyperscale, artificial (AI) data center campus," called Project Jupiter by the county. At its Aug. 26 meeting, Doña Ana County Commissioners voted 5 to one to publish a notice of intent to issue the bonds.
The Board of County Commissioners could vote to issue the bonds at its Sept. 19 meeting after a public hearing.
