The video captured a passenger frantically screaming, while others appeared startled and one person tried to catch the bird
There were some unexpected passengers on a Delta Air Lines flight traveling from Minneapolis to Wisconsin over the Memorial Day weekend.
On Saturday, May 24, a passenger on Delta Air Lines flight 2348 heading from Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport to Madison, Wisconsin captured a video of a pigeon flying through the aircraft's cabin.
A person was seen trying to catch the bird as startled passengers gasped and one person was heard frantically screaming in the clip, which was shared by Instagram user Tom Caw and obtained by PEOPLE.
Caw wrote on Instagram, "When I boarded Delta Flight 2348 at MSP tonight, I overheard another passenger tell a flight attendant there was a pigeon on the plane."
"The pilot got on the mic and confirmed a pigeon was on the plane, and said he had no experience with this situation. Baggage handlers boarded and carried the pigeon off. People applauded. A young girl asked if she could pet it," he added.
According to a video shared by the BBC, the pilot alerted the air traffic controller of the situation on board, laughing that the bird wouldn't leave until they "open the door."
"That's a first for me, wow," the air traffic controller said in the clip.
The outlet stated that the plane arrived in Madison around one hour later than scheduled, and Delta apologized to customers for the delay.
Caw continued on Instagram, "The plane eventually pulled away and began taxiing to the runway, and then another pigeon emerged! This is my video of it flying through the cabin."
"It was caught, and we returned to the gate. Pilot said when he radioed the control tower about us coming back due to a pigeon, the guy said that was a first for him. Pilot told him it was the second time for him -- the first being half an hour earlier," the passenger recalled.
"Another baggage handler boarded and removed it -- still alive. My guess is the pigeons were tired of flying and wanted snacks. They didn't know this flight to MSN is too short for Delta to offer beverage/snack service. @delta #PigeonsOnAPlane," Caw joked in the caption.
Caw told the BBC how he remembered pulling his phone out to get some footage of the incident.
"This is ridiculous," he recalled thinking, saying, per the outlet, "The woman next to me, obviously was quite panicky about it, she said to me, 'Oh, I'm gonna need a free wine.' "
